Right place, right time . . .

Talk about being in the right place at the right time . . . Hoboken resident, Stefanie Gordon, was on a plane when the space shuttle Endeavour broke through Earth's cloud cover, streaking towards space . . . Shot with her cell phone, it's turned viral and has made Stefanie an instant photo celebrity!

Lightroom mined for personal info?

Adobe will be updating their Lightroom software to fix a potential bug that would allow hackers to steal your images meta data and mine that info for nefarious uses. This is getting rediculous, but it's the world in which we live in. Apparently, the only camera that collects 'too much' meta data is an HP R607, but who else knows what other cameras are doing this.

From Adobe:

This bug only impacts customers who are saving metadata to JPEG files with a rare characteristic. (JPEG files must have an unusually large block of private camera data included in the file to be susceptible to the bug.) This scenario is so rare that we do not believe that it is necessary for customers who have already upgraded to revert to the previous version of Lightroom or Camera Raw. However, the bug could cause image corruption which falls within our highest severity category of bugs...

If you do work with a significant number of JPEG files in Lightroom or Camera Raw and routinely update metadata (keywords, captions, etc) it would be prudent to wait for the updated release of Lightroom and Camera Raw.

As always, make sure your software is up to date and protected!

Limit yourself . . .

A neat exercise I like to try is to find a spot in the yard or a park and capture as many different things as you can within that defined area. You go with one lens and let your situation guide you in your decision making. In this instance, with rain coming down all around me, I choose something close to home -  right outside my own garage. There was plenty to shoot - from ground cover to rain drops on a window. I choose a Sigma 70-300mm Macro lens, which forced me to narrow my vision and seek out those wonderful details I love to capture.

DIY Ring Flash . . .

Had to check this out . . . a Do It Yourself Ring Flash! Mine is on order. I'll let you know what I think and provide sample images when I get it in!

From the manufacturer's site:

The Ring Flash comes in a flat 40×45 cm (15.75”x 17.75”) box, and has everything you need to get it assembled so you can start shooting right away.

Some photographers like to attach to the ring flash to the flash head with gaffers tape. But if you want something a bit more sturdy, check out our Ring Flash Bracket.

The bottom opening on the ring flash is 7cm x 4cm (2.755” x 1.575”), and can be easily expended by slitting the four bottom corners of the ring flash. It will probably fit most normal size strobes. We’ve tested it with the following flashes:

  • Nikon: SB28, SB80dx, SB800, SB26
  • Canon: 430EX, 580EXII
  • Vivitar: 285

What Inspires Me . . .

This video embedded below, by Philip Bloom, shows what amazing films you can capture with DSLRs outfitted to shot shoot high-def video. This one video captures so many things that inspire me - including the one place that kicked it all off for me and really became a dream destination for me . . . watch the video, then read on . . .

In 2009, I was fortunate enough to do some work for Lucasfilm and was invited out to Skywalker Ranch and Lucasfilm's Presidio property . . . anyone that knows me and my love for all things Star Wars knows that this was an absolute dream come true for me. From an early age, I've been fascinated with the place - not just for key role in creating the Star Wars saga, but the shear creative force (pun intended!) surrounding the place. I have massive respect for George Lucas - not only as a creative professional - but also for his charity and generosity.  I remember reading The Creative Impulse and loving the chapter on Skywalker Ranch - they had this picture of the main house's library - with this amazing stained glass ceiling and spiral staircase. I always wanted to go there . . . and when I finally got there, it was just such a profound moment for me - to stand on that staircase . . . to soak it all in . . . just fantastic!
